Sarcopenia – What is it? And Why You Need to Avoid it

When is a Squat not a Squa?

So, the other day, I had a conversation with two ladies, and it went something like this;

Lady 1: ‘I keep falling over. I’m not even 50 yet. The other day, I slipped and fell and smashed my face off the floor. That was the second time I’ve fallen in the past month. It’s due to the menopause.”

Me: Have you ever thought about trying some balance or strength training? It could really help.

Lady: No, but I’m going to the doctor’s to ask for HRT.

Whaaaaa!! Howay Man! I know that menopause can be hell for lots of women, and HRT can be a lifesaver, but HRT ain’t going to get you stronger and build more muscle. Thus improving your balance.

As we age, our bodies undergo various changes, including the natural loss of muscle mass and strength, known as sarcopenia. For women over 50, this condition can lead to decreased mobility, increased risk of falls, and a decline in overall quality of life. However, there is good news: regular weight lifting can significantly counteract these effects and enhance your physical and mental well-being.

What is Sarcopenia?

Sarcopenia is the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength associated with ageing. It typically begins around 30 and accelerates with each passing decade. Factors contributing to sarcopenia include hormonal changes, reduced physical activity, inadequate protein intake, and inflammation. The consequences can be far-reaching, impacting balance, gait, and daily activities.

The Power of Weight Lifting

Lifting weights, also known as resistance or strength training, is a powerful tool in the fight against sarcopenia. Here are some great reasons to incorporate weightlifting into your routine:

  1. Build Muscle Mass – Regular resistance training stimulates muscle growth and helps prevent the loss of muscle mass. Even starting later in life can lead to significant improvements.
  2. Enhances Bone Density – Weight lifting increases bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures, which are common concerns for women over 50.
  3. Improves Metabolism – Muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue, even at rest. By building muscle, you boost your metabolism, aiding in weight management.
  4. Boosts Strength and Endurance – Stronger muscles enhance your ability to perform everyday tasks and reduce the likelihood of fatigue.
  5. Supports Joint Health – Strengthening the muscles around your joints provides better support, reduces pain, and improves joint function.
  6. Enhances Balance and Coordination – Improved muscle strength and function contribute to better balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls and injuries.

My ‘Luna Lifting’ Program

I created ‘Luna Lifting’ to easily fit into your everyday life. The workouts are quick and easy, all pre-recorded, so you can do them whenever suits you. I’m just preparing for ‘Luna Lifting Version 3’, and I’ve got the workouts down to 3 mins!

3 mins!! Can you do 3 mins daily? (Of course, you can do more if you wish), but if you can commit to just 3 minutes daily, those teeny tiny habits will build over the week, month, and year.

Imagine if you started doing just 3 minutes of weightlifting a day over a week; that would be 21 mins. Over a month, that would be almost 1.5 hours. Over a year, 18 hours of focused strength training.

What a difference that could make to your body and life!?

My ‘Luna Lifting’ program is exclusively available in ‘Wisdom Well’. Moreover, once you sign up, you get instant access to the program.

Plus, as a bonus, you also get access to my Saturday morning (9:30 am) live online Kettlebell class.

It’s an absolute no-brainer – if you were to attend Kettlebell Class on a Saturday morning (9:30 am), that would cost you £40 a month. When you join ‘Wisdom Well’ – you’re only paying a small amount more to get access to LOADS of other stuff;

*Pelvic Floor/Flow – my program to improve Pelvic Floor health

*Gut Health/Nettle Cleanse – a complete gut health program with a nettle detox

*Rocket Your Intuition – a full breathwork and spinal health program

Planned programs for the summer season include;

  • Luna Lifting 3 – Upper body, arms and core focused
  • Wall Pilates – a full pilates strength program using the wall

We’ve got so much going on – I feel that ‘Wisdom Well’ is the cumulation of EVERYTHING I’ve learned over the years.
