When is a Squat not a Squa?

I was just talking this morning to a fellow Pilates instructor and we were both saying how as we’ve grown up in the fitness industry and how it’s changed over the years (well, maybe we have changed a bit too).

When I first started out teaching fitness, many many years ago, it was all fast, high-energy, high power classes – nowadays our folks are more interested in mobility, low intensity, balance, co-ordination.

Maybe, life got a lot more high powered?

Or, maybe our clientele have ‘matured’ with us :D!

Anyway, as we get older we need different ways of working, the stuff that we did when we were younger is probably why we need more stability, core strength and mobility nowadays.

I work with lots of my 1:1 clients on preparing for operations (pre-hab), injury recovery and lots of core strengthening work. We cannot underestimate how important this work is – and it’s not just a matter of getting strong, it’s about maintaining it too. It’s not just a ‘squat’ it’s the ability to get up an down off a seat (or toilet), up and down stairs, in and out of a car.

It’s not a squat – it’s your independence (the 2nd reason after dementia that people end up in care homes is the inability to get safely out of a chair) – that is the power of a squat!

We’ve changed the way we teach and the way that we are, we’re not just about maxing and powering, we’re about aiding recovery, keeping mobile and helping to keep your independence.

I LOVE our studio breathwork’s – there’s always some breakthrough moments and some messages that come through. This month we’re channeling in the witch, the wise woman and the medicine woman.
