As we approach the Winter Solstice—the longest night of the year—it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The to-do lists grow longer, the pace feels faster, and many of you are coming to class stressed and burnt out. But here’s the thing – the Winter Solstice isn’t about rushing or doing more. It’s a sacred moment to pause, reflect, and honour the deep stillness of the season.

In ancient traditions, the Winter Solstice was celebrated as a time to connect with the calm within the chaos. Whether it was the Celtic Yule, honouring the rebirth of the sun, or the meditative practices of Eastern cultures that marked the turning point of the year, this was a moment for rest, renewal, and reconnection – not rushing through and doing more.

The Wisdom of the Season

Winter is nature’s time for rest. The trees shed their leaves, animals hibernate, and the Earth herself slows down to recharge for the renewal of spring. But in our modern lives, we often resist this natural rhythm. Instead of leaning into rest, we push harder—leaving ourselves drained when we should be replenishing our energy.

This solstice, I invite you to honour the wisdom of the season:

Let go of unnecessary stress: Just as trees release their leaves, ask yourself what you can release from your mental and emotional load.
Embrace the stillness: Take time to pause. The darkness of the solstice is an invitation to go inward and find peace.
Prepare for renewal: Use this time to set intentions, not by forcing action but by planting seeds for what you wish to grow in the months ahead.
