Yesterday I taught my Kettlebell class for the first time in about 6 weeks – it felt so good to get back on the iron, and it was the first time I felt properly warm in a week!
I then went out shopping in town – so I probably put a bit more pressure on my pelvic floor – especially after not venturing very far over the festive season.
I was in a shop and I noticed a familiar bearing down pain, and pain in my pelvis. I say it was familiar but it was a pain that I hadn’t really felt for 18 years – after the birth of my son.
It was a difficult birth and it left me with many symptoms of a damaged pelvic floor (PF), here are some of the main symptoms;
*Urge incontinence
*Pelvic Pain or Lower Back Pain
*A bearing down pain when on feet for too long
*Fecal incontinence or inability to hold in wind
*Prolapse
As soon as I felt that pain, I took some deep breaths and connected into my PF muscles, gently contracted them and switched them on consciously.
Pain magically disappeared.
That got me wondering, how many women would know how to do this? It’s such a valuable skill – it can help with pain, it can give you time if there’s a queue for the loo, it can help reduce the loo anxiety.
As menopause symptoms kick in, this can also affect the PF muscles, the elasticity can change, the strength and tone can change, and you might find yourself getting a few symptoms that you didn’t have before.
And, don’t believe the adverts – those ‘Tena’ lady, pee pants, are not the way forward! And, if you’re planning your days out or journeys based upon where the nearest loo is – then that’s a sign you need to do some work.
Knowing where your PF muscles are, and how to engage them is an amazing skill to have – and one that I’m appreciating so much more now I’m getting older.
After the birth on my son, it left me on a mission to heal my PF muscles and in doing so, helping many other women to do the same. I know it works as when I gave birth to my second son, the midwife even said – ‘whoa you’ve got a strong PF!’ – as she caught him :D.
The PF is one of the first lessons I teach on my beginners Pilates Program.
