Ah, the joys of menopause. The magical time when our bodies throw a curveball or two (or twenty), and we find ourselves navigating hot flashes, mood swings, and, of course, the delightful gift of brain fog. The fog that descends just as you’re about to finish a sentence… or maybe even remember your own name.
Yesterday, I couldn’t remember any of the names of Pilates exercises – even though I’ve been teaching for 10 years! Their names had all be magically wiped from my brain.
But what if this chaotic, confusing, and sometimes comical phase of life is actually a hidden superpower? I know it sounds like something out of a wellness guru’s motivational speech (well, I am the ‘Guru of the North’ :D).
Menopause, brain fog, and all the bits in between can truly be a transformative time in your life.
Let’s talk about those magnificent hot (or cold) flashes. Sure, they might feel like you’ve been spontaneously combusted from the inside out, but they’re also a sign that your body is undergoing a transformation. It’s like your very own personal furnace — great for winter nights, less great when you’re trying to look chic in public.
And brain fog?
Well, what better way to test your patience (and sense of humour) than to forget your keys, your shopping list, and, at one point, whether or not you actually ate lunch. I often feel like I spend most of my life looking for things.
Here’s the thing — menopause can be an opportunity. Of course, it might feel like you’re stumbling through a fog at times, but it’s actually your body’s way of resetting itself. Consider it your personal “reboot” button — a chance to hit refresh on your health, your habits, and even your mindset.
It’s a perfect time to embrace your inner transformation — no matter how foggy the road ahead may seem. With every foggy moment, you’re shedding the old and stepping into a new chapter. This can be the period where you start prioritising yourself, setting new goals, and saying, “You know what? I’m embracing the adventure — even if I forget where I put my keys every now and then.”
Tips for Navigating Menopause and Brain Fog with Style (and Grace… Mostly)
1.
Move Like You Mean It -
Regular exercise, especially Pilates, can help improve circulation, balance hormones, and, surprisingly, boost mental clarity. It’s like giving your brain a breath of fresh air (without needing a fan on full blast).
2.Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate -
Hot flashes and brain fog thrive in dehydration. Water is your best friend, especially if you’re also going to forget to drink it (ahem, menopause brain strikes again).
3.Eat to Fuel Your Fabulous -
Keep your diet rich in omega-3s, leafy greens, and foods that support brain health.
4.Set Small Goals -
Forget the “big picture” sometimes — set a small, attainable goal (like remembering your phone number) and celebrate that win. You’re not just surviving; you’re thriving in the fog!
5.Mindfulness is Your Superpower -
Meditation and breathing exercises can help clear the mental fog. Bonus - you can do it while sitting on the couch and avoiding any real responsibility — multitasking at its finest!
I have always believed that ‘knowledge is power’, and actually knowing what’s going on in your body is incredibly empowering. In fact, it can give you a roadmap of how to navigate it, how long it could last, and what works for you.
I’m so excited to be hosting my first ‘Menopower®’ Event (yes, I hold a trademark, like a pro!). It’s going to be a mixture of the science and magic of your menopause transformation.
I’ll be teaching you loads of practical things you can do to help, the anatomy and physiology of menopause and some of the alchemy too.
